Dedicated Volunteer
Longtime Runner
Favorite Team Ortho Event: Monster Dash
Maureen Johnston volunteers for Team Ortho because it’s a passion that touches her heart and soul. She and her family members are avid runners and she works with kids for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital (an orthopaedic facility) in Minneapolis. As the Child Life Director, Maureen works to keep children with orthopaedic challenges active.
About five years ago, Maureen became part of a Shriner’s triathlon relay team. Her team partnered with Team Ortho during the race and that’s
when she met Executive Director John Larson. “One experience working with them and I was hooked,” Maureen recalls. She has been running with Team Ortho and volunteering for them ever since.
“I do anything [John] asks…promote races, information, registration, set-up…” Maureen says. Some days she combines her volunteering and running by setting up at 5:00 a.m. and then starting the race when the gun goes off.
“I would definitely recommend volunteering for Team Ortho to anyone,” Maureen says. “It is such a pleasure to give your time to an organization that truly appreciates everything you do…It is uplifting to be a part of an organization that does so much for others.”
As a runner, she has her next goals set for herself: the Monster Dash and the Minneapolis Half Marathon. As a volunteer, she could be doing just about anything. But when you see her anywhere along the trail, at registration, at a volunteer booth, make sure you stop and say hi!
Find out why hundreds of other people, like Maureen, volunteer with Team Ortho each year. Check out Team Ortho’s Volunteer page. Come on out and get involved!
